Listening to Yourself

I believe, however, that to develop an expert level of listening, you must first begin listening to yourself.

What messages do you tell yourself on a daily basis? What thoughts are consistent in your mind about yourself, your co-workers and about your loved ones?

You can get valuable clues about how to propel your life in a more positive direction by paying attention to the mental chatter that occurs in your head on a daily basis. See what happens when you turn off the radio, television, phones or Blackberry. It’s an interesting exercise to do laundry or dishes and be present with your thoughts. Notice what you feel like if you go to the gym or do your workout without an iPod.

Your inner world opens up to you to assist you in making new choices for yourself, once you unplug from the numerous distractions that the outside world offers. When I was working as a Sales Promotion Manager, I liked to go for walks in the morning. The walks were filled with a cluttered mindset of all of the things I had to accomplish that day. I would get out of bed and be attached to my “To Do” list without any real quality time in just being available to myself and what I wanted for my life. It was an automatic 0-60 as soon as my feet hit the floor about work and getting tasks done.

I hired a coach to create balance in my life. I noticed how unbalanced I had become. I forgot to listen to the inner messages I was receiving. One such message was that I needed time for myself. Another message was that I needed time with my husband. I found that my own needs were at the bottom of the list because I was distracted and focusing my time and energy on work and on my young children.

I also held a strong belief that I needed to work through the pain and exhaustion I was feeling at the time. I had a “just suck it up and do it” attitude. I was resisting the reality of what I felt in the moment. My pain increased to near deafening levels because I was resisting the truth.

My world all around me showed signs of this lack of balance and listening to my inner guidance system. My children were suffering from illnesses regularly. I was so sick at times that I lost my voice consistently and I became so weak that I didn’t have enough strength to hold my children.

My coach introduced me to the concept of taking five minutes for myself everyday just to listen to my thoughts. I was shocked to reveal the suffering I was holding in my thoughts. I had read a statistic somewhere that we have 90,000 thoughts a day and 2/3 of those thoughts are negative. Boy was this true for me — I uncovered the main source of my negativity right in my head!

There were stories about the past and fears about the future, but never a focus of what wonders existed in the present moment.
